"Abie's DooWop Taxi" welcomes veteran Pittsburgh DJ Phil Lenz Phil's StoryI fell in love with radio at the age of 4 and knew that sometime in the future I would have to be involved. While stationed in Vietnam in 1968 I converted a tactical radio rig into an FM transmitter and played American Rock N' Roll to a rather large captive audience of Army and Air Force buddies from the Bien Hoa Airbase. After returning to civilian life I worked for a national record distributor. Having worked as a television, then radio engineer, I had some part time gigs as a jock. I settled in as a chief engineer for several radio stations (WWSW, WSHH, WJAS) in Pittsburgh. I've been collecting records since I was old enough to know how to turn on a record player. The first record I bought was either "Three Coins in the Fountain by Four Aces or Mule Train by Frankie Laine" 78's. The First 45 I bought was "The Happy Whistler by Don Robertson but while at a family picnic a cousin took me into the rec-room where there was a Wurlitzer 1015 round top jukebox and she repeatedly played this new record "Rock Around The Clock by a new group called Bill Haley & The Comets". That was it, I was hooked. The minute I had enough money to buy a record I bought one, 78's at that time. Well some 27,000 45's later I thought I needed to share them with anyone who would listen. So here I have arrived on "Abie's DooWop Taxi" knowing I have some of the internets best listeners. |
